  • What will my child study in second grade?

    Language Arts

    • Understand details in fiction and nonfiction text
    • Determine the main idea, lesson, or moral in fiction and nonfiction text
    • Use visual images to understand and clarify text
    • Compare and contrast two versions of the same story (fiction) or two texts on the same topic (nonfiction)
    • Know and use grade level phonics and word analysis skills to decode words
    • Read grade level text accurately and fluently
    • Write stories, opinions, and informative text with a topic sentence, supporting details, and conclusion
    • Use correct grammar when writing and speaking
    • Use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in writing
       

    Math

    • Memorize addition and subtraction facts to 20
    • Count, read, write and compare numbers to 1,000
    • Add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping
    • Measure and estimate lengths in standard units
    • Tell time on an analog clock to the nearest 5 minutes
    • Count and solve word problems using dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies
    • Read, create and understand picture and bar graphs
    • Identify and describe the attributes of triangles, cubes, hexagons, pentagons, and quadrilaterals
       

    Science

    • Understand and use the scientific method
    • Measure and record weather conditions
    • Identify and describe the water cycle and types of clouds
    • Identify characteristics of a solid, liquid, and gas
    • Compare and contrast life cycles of insects and mammals
    • Identify parts and functions of the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems
       

    Social Studies

    • Explain why it is important to be a responsible citizen
    • Understand and explain the meanings of American symbols
    • Recognize and use different types of maps and map characteristics
    • Describe reasons for immigration
    • Understand culture and traditions
    • Explain the concept of supply and demand
