What will my child study in third grade?

Language Arts

  • Writes a personal experience narrative that shows why the experience is important to the writer
  • Writes an imaginative story that centers around a distinct character
  • Writes a report that details events in proper sequence
  • Considers audience, purpose and format in writing forms of communication and poetry
  • Uses concrete descriptive words, commas in a simple series, and "a" and "an" correctly
  • Writes using cursive handwriting
  • Edits writing for spelling
  • Reads and comprehends imaginative story, personal narrative, report, communication and poetry
  • Continues to expand phonetic skills
  • Structurally analyzes prefixes, suffixes and abbreviations
  • Expects to meet challenges but is more confident of overcoming them
  • Works towards a third grade benchmark reading fluency goal of 107 words per minute by the end of the school year

Math

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
  • Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division.
