I am Mrs. Moore and I am excited to be a Roadrunner!
I am originally from Ohio. I attended Kent State University and could not wait to get out of that cold weather. Mr. Moore and I moved to Arizona 3 weeks after we got married in 2007 and we love the sunshine! We like to travel to Prescott and San Diego when we can.
I have been an art teacher for 18 years, some of that time was in Ohio, bouncing around 4 different schools. Yes, 4 schools in one week, each week, for a whole school year. I taught out of a box and started the week with kindergarten and ended the week with High School. I taught primarily Kindergarten art out of a box in Glendale AZ before, at a training meeting, DV teachers suggested I try DV. I made the right choice! I worked at Norterra Canyon from 2008-2019. I made the choice in 2019 to develop the art program at Mirage. I am very excited to be at Mirage and to continue to develop our art program.
I love making lasting bonds with my students. I love seeing so many returning, smiling faces and look forward to meeting many more. I feel that Art, as well as band, music, and physical education offer students so many amazing opportunities for expression.
My room is a safe space, and I hope my students feel welcomed, loved and appreciated.
Not every student is lucky to excel at every subject right away and I feel that Art (as well as many other things) affords struggling students an outlet. Art, as well as expression, is very important to a well-rounded child. I love being a part of your child's day and seeing their ideas come to life.
In my spare time, haha, I paint and sell shoes, laugh with Mr. Moore, have fun with our children. Unfortunately, this summer we had to say goodbye to our favorite puggy, Edgar Allan Pug. He was our best friend for 13 years and the unofficial mascot of the art room.
I love the color blue, laughing with my family and friends, searching for that perfect soft pretzel, white bristled paint brushes, anything pug, Back to the Future, garlic bread and can normally be bribed with a Coke Zero.
Classroom Expectations
Grading and Assessments
-Many of our projects take longer than one art class. If you are checking your students power schools, you may not see a grade for a while.
-Yes, I do grade each project, for each child. Art is for a grade and for a purpose.
-Some classes receive participation grades for longer projects or if they have art more than one time in a week. Participation is expected and there are multiple options for early finishers. Students in grades 5 and 6 may have a few projects "going" at the same time, with ample time to work on, refine and finish them.
-Your child's work IS passed back after their 2 week session is over. Some assignments are hung in the hallways and would take longer to pass back. Work is sent home at the end of the session.
- I encourage students to take their work home, regardless if they like it or not, the people at home would like to see it!! I encourage students to not throw their artwork away, as they have worked on it for as least 2 weeks and should be proud of it. Once it leaves the art room, Mrs. Moore is not responsible for what they choose to do with it.
Please ask your student to see their work!
It's not "Just Art". I hear this many, many times a day from students who say their parents don't care about art, its not a real class and is not important. Please help discourage this idea by encouraging your artist. Check out the "It's just art?" page if you think its "just art."
I am glad you stopped by!
Wishlist
The art room could REALLLY use tissues and cleaning wipes. We see so many artists and would love the help to keep our kids safe.
The Mirage Art room is very lucky to have so many families that keep us stocked up! Cleaning out the garage, playroom, under the couch? Finding weird things, bring them in! Thanks so much for your help. We have over 500 artists using our supplies!
If you would like to donate to the Art Room, we could always use any of the following:
Sponges for cleaning and painting | Plastic Wrap for cool painting backgrounds | Facial Tissues | Markers |
Baby wipes for young hands and sometimes faces. | Duct tape, plain color or cool patterns, we're not picky! | unscented lotion for students hands after ceramics clean up | Those nice permanent black markers... |
Black Sharpies | Aluminum Foil | SHARPIES | Press 'n' Seal |
Fancy crayons (multicultural, gitter or construction paper specific) | Large plastic tubs from pretzels/cheeseballs | actual cheeseballs :) | Erasers, non pencil topper type |
Old calendars | Select-a-size paper towels | We like sharpies | Animal Books |
non fruit scented hand soap with pump | Gallon size ziplock bags for ceramics | stickers! | indivudual packs of markers |
Clorox Wipes, because, ew | Ticonderoga brand pencils | fine tipped markers |
a nice note |
Before you throw these away... Barrels from Costco Pretzels, Pringles Cans, baby blocks, stamps, calendars, frames with no glass, puzzles with missing pieces, hair dryer that still blows any air, containers with no lid, free pizza coupons, decorations from a party.... think about bringing them to the art room!!
Here are a few grand wishes we have in the art room:)
Vertical rack for our drawing books
Thank you so much to the parents and community partners who have donated supplies, you are amazing! Last year we got a new drying rack and the year before, a huge rug for our ViewSonic board area!
It's "just" art
If I had a nickel for every time I hear "It's just art"...
Sadly, a big part of my job is convincing people (some of them students) of the opposite. Art is important.
I love teaching your children about art! —Here's why:

Creativity Crisis: For the first time, research shows that American creativity is declining.
By Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman
… creativity scores had been steadily rising, just like IQ scores, until 1990. Since then, creativity scores have consistently inched downward. “It’s very clear, and the decrease is very significant,” Kim says. It is the scores of younger children in America—from kindergarten through sixth grade—for whom the decline is “most serious.”
A recent IBM poll of 1,500 CEO's identified creativity as the #1 "leadership competency" of the future.
It’s too early to determine conclusively why U.S. creativity scores are declining. One likely culprit is the number of hours kids now spend in front of the TV and playing video games rather than engaging in creative activities.

According to a June 2005 Harris poll, 93 % of Americans believe that the arts are vital to providing a well-rounded education. Researchers tell us that getting an early start in the arts can make a real difference in the lives of children. Participation in the arts is important. Research shows that the benefits of early arts education extend way beyond providing a creative outlet for children. Arts education can help develop:
its not "JUST" art
- Early exposure to visual art, music, or drama promotes activity in the brain.
- Art helps children understand other subjects, we incorporate everything from math and science, to language arts and geography.
- Art nurtures inventiveness as it engages children in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation.
- Participating in art activities helps children to gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience, adapting to and respecting others' ways of working and thinking, developing creative problem-solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways. We learn about many cultures and people that your child can relate to, hundreds of years and miles apart!
- It encourages your child show their individuality and develop their creativity.
